The Best Friend Mechanic (BFM) is a system that decides who should appear in Chapter 5 to cheer Lucy up before she goes back to the forest. Every children of Silentown has a chance to be in the spot, depending on how the player plays. In order to have a specific character show up, you have to max them by fulfilling the events below. The choices are mutually exclusive, so you can't max out more than one character at a time, if no character is maxed, the cat (Squinty) will appear.

 

Blue:

Suggest doing the "trick shot" to Blue. (Chapter 1)

Reply to Silver that you do believe Blue's stories in Barn Alley. (Chapter 2)

Make a "Not so scary" horror story. (Chapter 2)

Find Blue in his secret hideout. (Chapter 4)

 

Red:

Do not play the Spy. (Chapter 2)

Make a "Very scary" horror story. (Chapter 2)

Say that Brains are better than Brawns in the argument between Red and Black. (Chapter 4)

Lie to Raven saying that Black was already captured. (Chapter 4)

 

Black

Do not play the Spy. (Chapter 2)

Make a "Very scary" horror story. (Chapter 2)

Say that Brawns are better than Brains in the argument between Red and Black. (Chapter 4)

 

Silver

Don't take Blue's side while interacting in Barn Alley. (Chapter 2)

Do not play the spy. (Chapter 2)

Make a "Not so scary" horror story. (Chapter 2)

Do not hit him. (Chapter 3)

 

Sunny

Suggest doing a normal pass to Blue. (Chapter 1)

Play the Spy. (Chapter 2)

Tell her what is going on behind the Barn. (Chapter 2)

Bring the scissors back to her. (Chapter 3)

Say that you will protect her when she is scared. (Chapter 4)

 

Raven:

  6. Mysterious footprints: Barn road, interact with the animal footprints on the ground close to the fence after the children have left. (Chapter 2)
  7. Broken toy: Bench Alley, on the empty box on the right. (Chapter 2)
  8. Puppy: Town Square during the festival, if you give Coal a sandwitch. (Chapter 2, Festival)
  9. Depths of the well: Town Square, pick up a Stone hidden by the church's roof and throw it in the well. (Chapter 3)
  10. Coal's fur: Forest Way, on the forest gate once you saw the dog leave looking for the woodworker. (Chapter 3)
  11. Complicated padlock: Friend House, if you inspect Olivia's door from inside the walls when you enter to take the flower. (Chapter 3)
  12. Big metal ruler: School, one of the three windows is locked using a ruler. Inspect it before saving the cat. (Chapter 4)
  13. Blue's drawing: Barn Inside, inside the barn during hide and seek. (Chapter 4)
  14. Huge Snail: Forest, Entrance - free the snail glued to the rock before proceeding to the next map. (Chapter 4, Forest)
  15. Old kettle: Forest, Trunk Walk, 3rd level, inside the hollow tree to the left, at the opposite side of the exit. The player must use Trunk Key on the tree before using it on the exit. (Chapter 4, Forest)
  16. Flower of hope: Labyrinth Intro, immediately on the right. (Chapter 4, Forest)
  17. Glass shards: Home, Cellar: interact with the shards on the ground. (Chapter 4, Home)
  18. Doll: Trap Roots (first time alone) in an empty trunk right after capturing the Fireflies. (Chapter 5)
  19. Windmill: Fountain, interact with the windmill. (Chapter 5)
  20. Mysterious paintings: Cave, interact with the carvings on the wall inside the cave. (Chapter 5)
  21. Cat: Get the cat as best friend.
  22. Friend: Get one of the children as best friend.
  23. Children: Choose the Children’s Song in the end.
  24. Back Home: Choose Mom’s Song in the end.
  25. Forest Howl: Choose the song of the forest in the end.
  26. Hope: Choose the Song of the World in the end.

Despite our thorough testing we found an issue that made it ‘into the wild’. By completing the puzzle improperly you can encounter a bug where it’s not possible to progress further. We are working on a patch and will release it as fast as possible.

This issue appears mostly on freshly installed systems, and it’s very likely that you are missing some redistributables, like Direct X. Try installing or updating your Direct X version and Visual C++ Redist 2022 and see if this solves this issue.
