Many puzzle motives are locked and you can find the hint that you need a certain amount of medals to unlock the puzzle. In your profile, you can see which medals you already achieved. You can access your profile via the main menu, by clicking on 'Profile' just below the picture in the middle.
In there, you can find all medals. Many of those will be achieved automatically, by completing the campaign. For other medals there are conditions, and you can see those by hovering the mouse over the medal. The condition will be displayed below.
